When facing an unplanned pregnancy, you have three options as you consider outcomes: Abortion, adoption, and parenting. For women who aren’t ready to parent and aren’t comfortable with abortion, adoption can be a loving and compassionate option to help another couple grow their family.

If you’re considering adoption, we’d love to help by connecting you to the resources, agencies, and support to get the answers and direction you need. There are three types of adoption plans you can choose from. Here are the basics of adoption to get you started!

Open Adoption

In an open adoption, you can have an ongoing relationship and communication with the adoptive family and your child. The details of the open adoption are decided on by you and the couple and mediated by your adoption agency representative. Many women choose this option as a way to still have a voice and presence in their child’s life even if they aren’t in a place to be able to raise the child.

Closed Adoption

A closed adoption is the best option for women who want to move on after this chapter of their life. There’s no shame in this option and is a way to know there won’t be future communication or contact between you, the child, and the adoptive family. The birth records will remain sealed and your identity private.

Semi-Open Adoption

A semi-open adoption offers the most flexibility and choice in terms of how it’s set up. It allows for some communication between you and the adoptive family and child, but this will be more defined and restricted than in a fully open adoption. Your adoption agency will help establish what this type of adoption looks like by working with you and the adoptive couple.
